Pumpkin Bread with Chocolate Chips
A cinnamon pumpkin loaf with chocolate chips throughout and a tender orange crumb, made for slicing on a fall afternoon.

Estimated total time. This covers the full recipe from start to finish, including preparation and any resting, chilling, baking, or cooling. Some of that time is hands-off.

Every fall, as Halloween gets closer, I make this pumpkin bread again. The top splits as it bakes, but I wait until the loaf has cooled before cutting into it. That’s when you see the orange pumpkin crumb with chocolate chips running through the slices.
The cinnamon is in the batter too, and there is no icing or careful decorating to do afterward. Just give the loaf time to cool completely. If you want to bake it for a fall afternoon, I would allow for that wait rather than trying to cut it while it is still warm.
Ingredients for Pumpkin Bread with Chocolate Chips
I use cooked pumpkin puree, plain soy yogurt, and sunflower oil in this loaf. The cinnamon and chocolate chips are both part of the recipe, so each slice has a little of each alongside the pumpkin.

- 2 eggs
- 70 g granulated sugar
- 180 g cooked pumpkin puree
- 90 g sunflower oil
- 90 g plain soy yogurt
- 300 g all-purpose flour
- 10 g baking powder
- 5 g ground cinnamon
- 80 g chocolate chips
How to Make Pumpkin Bread with Chocolate Chips
Line the loaf pan before starting; the batter can go straight in once the chocolate chips are folded through.
Prepare the pan
Preheat the oven to 180°C (about 350°F). Line a loaf pan with parchment paper.
Whisk eggs and sugar
Crack the eggs into a large bowl. Add the granulated sugar and whisk by hand until well combined.

Add the pumpkin
Add the cooked pumpkin puree, sunflower oil, and plain soy yogurt. Mix again until smooth.

Fold in the dry ingredients
Add the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and ground cinnamon. Fold with a spatula or whisk just until the batter is smooth and no dry flour remains.

Add chocolate chips
Add the chocolate chips and fold them in with just a few strokes.

Fill and score
Pour the batter into the lined loaf pan and smooth the surface. Lightly coat the tip of a knife with oil and run it lengthwise down the center of the batter for a more even split on top as the loaf bakes.

Bake the loaf
Bake for about 50 minutes. Insert a toothpick into the center before removing the loaf from the oven; it should come out clean or with just a few moist crumbs.
Cool before slicing
Let the pumpkin bread cool slightly in the pan, then transfer it to a wire rack and allow it to cool completely before slicing.
Tips that make a difference
- Stop folding once no dry flour remains so the batter is not mixed longer than it needs to be.
- Fold in the chocolate chips with just a few strokes so they are dispersed without continuing to work the batter.
- Run the oiled knife tip down the center of the batter if you want a more even split on top.
- Check the center with a toothpick before taking the loaf out, then let it cool completely before cutting.
Once the Loaf Has Cooled
I wait until the loaf is completely cool before cutting into it. The slices show the orange pumpkin crumb and the chocolate chips throughout, and the split along the top gives the loaf its familiar homemade look.
